Global Green USA,with the support of Brad Pitt and lead funding from the Home Depot Foundation is building the first sustainable low-income housing community in New Orleans’s ravaged Lower Ninth Ward.
Actor Brad Pitt, 43, visited the construction site of a house that is based on the winning design in a competition he launched to help the area recover from Hurricane Katrina. He walked through the house last week, pointing out its many green features.
During the tour, Pitt tells NBC's Ann Curry that too often light and ventilation are sacrificed in the building of affordable housing. “We got great light. There’s windows everywhere and there is this great breeze coming in, and not only that, this house does not poison the environment.”
Pitt sees rebuilding in the area as a social justice issue. He hopes to preserve the unique culture and spirit of the area by rebuilding a neighborhood inspired by safe and sustainable green homes. He argues, “So any debate on 'should we rebuild, should we not' -- I'll take you on."
Pitt takes the green issue further telling Curry that the idea of paying for energy and being dependant on oil is unnecessary. He says, “There’s the sun, feel the breeze, and we got water right out there, any one of these can be harnessed. It’s simple, it’s smart.”
Last weekend, Pitt and wife Angelina Jolie, hosted a lavish charity gala in the Hamptons benefiting the victims of Hurricane Katrina and Pitt's Make It Right project which he started after he visited the devastated area.
