DHL has reiterated its commitment to the environment by replacing its plastic bags with eco-friendly ones. The new delivery bags are reusable, recyclable and will only take two years to degrade compared to normal bags that take 1,000 years.

"The introduction of the new eco bags in the Middle East is an extension of DHL's environmentally friendly local initiatives," said Janet Jweihan, DHL Express country manager. Conventional bags can take up to 1,000 years to degrade.

"This increases the volume in landfills and contributes to the hazardous build-up of methane in these sites," commented Jweihan.

The oxi-biodegradable bags will be replaced over the following months and across the 220 countries in which DHL operates.

"The biodegradable bags are an initiative that helps bring us one step closer to an environmentally-conscious community. The overall environmental situation in the UAE can be improved only through individuals and companies acting together to improve the situation," she added.

Other initiatives include the introduction of CNG powered vehicles and the use of bicycles for deliveries.
