Think you've learned everything you need to know about the YMCA from the 70's disco hit by the Village People?  Well if we all stopped learning in the 70's we'd still have those horrible bell bottoms to contend with!

Since the YMCA was founded in the U.S. in 1851, as a response to unhealthy social conditions in urban environments, the organization has continued to change to meet the needs within the community. Even though the organization was founded on Judeo-Christian principals, most YMCAs focus on the "mind, spirit and body"--rather than distinguishing a particular type or brand of spirituality.

Although it was men-only until the 70's, today there is a larger percentage of women than men. Each branch strives to be inclusive and to serve the particular needs of it's community providing access to what is needed most; health and fitness, education, childcare, senior care, youth programming, and etc.

The non-profit, carries out its mission within the framework of local branches.  The physical make up and programming offered at each branch can be drastically different.  Some Ys are focused on the health and wellness aspect; complete with a fitness facility.  Others center their work on community outreach.

With a name as recognizable as Coca-Cola why does your local YMCA deserve your support? Just as each branch decides it's focus--each branch must support itself financially by receiving donations from its community.  The idea is with local support comes a local focus.

Be the change you wish to see in the world by becoming a member, a volunteer or a donor. The YMCA is that change. Won't you follow it's lead? ymca.net
