Benefiting Tenderloin Kids

San Francisco’s coolest party celebrates its 15th anniversary this year, having raised over $1 million to benefit the Tenderloin Neighborhood Development Corporation’s (TNDC) programs serving children and families. The fundraiser on October 10th will feature poolside hijinks as local celebrities, including writer and producer Robert Mailer Anderson and KRON's Bay Cafe host Joey Altman, get thrown into the Phoenix Hotel pool for top bids.
TNDC’s After School Program will be among the services to benefit. A beehive of positively charged energy, the center at 225 Eddy Street serves 55 kids, ages 5 to 17, daily with more than 200 attending over a year. Youths get a safe, supervised space where they engage in art, dance, and judo classes, team sports, trips to parks and museums, and homework tutoring. Sixteen students even visited Chicago this past June for an annual college tour. “We want our teens to view college as an option,” says Program Manager Laura Choe. Opportunities are often provided to inspire Tenderloin kids to see life beyond the streets.
The center opened its doors in 1993 and doubled in size in 2001. With 3,500 children calling the Tenderloin home, more of them can use a haven like TNDC’s After School Program.
