Jerry Lewis, 81, helped raise approximately $64 million during his annual Labor Day Telethon to benefit the Muscular Dystrophy Association. Beating last year’s record by $3 million.
"We did it. We did it ... We can go shopping," a proud Lewis said as the tote board topped $63.7 million for his 42nd telethon.
Lewis showed no signs of quitting the telethon adding, "We'll be here every year as long as I'm breathing in and out," Lewis said. He spend most of the 21 1/2-hour show behind a desk, but when he ventured onto the stage to greet guests he was lively and engaging.
Since it’s beginning in 1966, the telecast over $1.46 billion has been raised to fight the disease beginning on a single television station in New York City. Over 190 stations here in the United States and abroad carried the program. mdausa.org
