Are you a vegetarian, dating a carnivore, but can’t find a restaurant that pleases you both? Then Weird Fish is just the spot for you. This homey nine-table American style neighborhood restaurant offers bountiful vegan, vegetarian and fish choices for the fish and greenery lover in you both.
The eco-friendly restaurant serves sustainable and farmed fish and has quickly become an instant hit for the City’s hip green-set. “We are making conscious efforts to embody a green business practice at the Weird Fish.” Says co-owner, Timothy Holt.
Holt, and co-owner Peter Hood, of Boogaloo's and the St. Francis Fountain, built the space from the ground up. “We’re a mom-and-pop shop focusing on fish, vegetarian and vegan options.” Says Holt, and then he laughingly adds. “There is no chicken, beef or pork in the restaurant ever.”
Omnivore couples, where one is a vegetarian and the other is a meat or fish eater, were the inspiration for the restaurant. “They can come here and both can have multiple choices. I figured it was a great thing to have many options for bi-nivore couples.” Adds Holt.
Weird Fish focuses on local and seasonal menu items, but their claim-to-fame is the "Suspicious" dish, a kind of nightly chef’s surprise. The special fishplate is always a secret, but consistently includes a fish such as tilapia, catfish or trout.
Another popular item is the American style fish and chips serve with tartar sauce. The vegetarian version substitutes the fish with tempeh or tofu (textured soy protein) and comes with a sesame-ginger sauce. The vegetable gluten version is called “Hellfish”.
