Every day the average American can splash, pour and flush between 40 and 130 gallons of water at home. By using more efficient fixtures and checking for leaks, households can reduce water usage by about 30 percent. Next week Phil’s five outdoor water saving tips.

1) Never use your toilet as a wastebasket
Save 2-5 gallons a day.

2) Take quick showers
Save 5-10 gallons a day.

3) Turn off the tap while brushing your teeth or shaving
Save 4-10 gallons a day.

4) Take a shallow bath instead of a shower
Save 5-15 gallons a day.

5) Run washing machine and dishwasher only when full
Otherwise adjust the water level setting carefully. Save 15-30 gallons a week.
