The actress gave the gift on Monday to the World Food Programme (WFP) and the funds have been earmarked to feed thousands of schoolchildren in Kenya.

"I have seen with my own eyes what a difference a simple cup of nutritious porridge can make in a child's life," said the Barrymore, who has traveled to Kenya twice in the past two years for WFP. "It helps them learn, stay healthy and sets them on track for a bright future. I urge everyone — everywhere — to help WFP 'Fill the Cup' for hungry children, and make hunger history."

Drew is a WFP ambassador against hunger and her gift kicks off the agency's $3 billion "Fill the Cup" campaign that aims to feed 59 million hungry school children in developing countries for a year. WFP hopes the United States will be able to donate enough money to feed 10 million of those children.

Barrymore announced her very generous contribution on the Oprah show. Donations like hers, helps feed millions of people all over the globe every year. WFP has a dream: to feed 10 million more hungry school children in Africa by Thanksgiving Day. If every viewer of today's Oprah Winfrey Show gives $50 to help fill a child's cup for a year, that dream can be realized.

Even a small donation will go a long way. It takes just 25 cents to fill one of the Red Cups that WFP uses to give hungry kids a school meal. This food will not only feed bodies, but also minds, and will help transform lives. Help us Fill the Cup.

WFP is the United Nations frontline agency in the fight against global hunger. Operations aim to: Save lives in refugee crises and other emergencies, Improve nutrition and quality of life of world's most vulnerable people at critical times in their lives, Enable development by (a) helping people build assets that benefit them directly; (b) promoting the self-reliance of poor people and communities. wfp.org
